The Middle School Dean of Students performs a critical multifaceted role to create a harmonious and functional learning environment with overall responsibility for student wellbeing and behavior management. The MS Dean of Students also provides visionary leadership and demonstrates exemplary management skills with enhanced communication with all stakeholders.
Salient job responsibilities
Culture and Climate Leadership:
Model and encourage DAA's Culture of Kindness and perpetuate the school's mission and values with colleagues, administration, students and parents
Skillfully lead and drive the successful implementation of GEMS Education and DAA's policies, procedures and codes of conduct
Promote a positive and collaborative learning environment to create and sustain the MS community and spirit
Contribute actively to innovative learning and team building with the aim to enhance DAA's programs and professional developments
Student Wellbeing:
In collaboration with the Heads of Grade develop and implement a Transformation and Discovery program to meet the developmental needs of young adolescents aimed at building community; developing life skills; inquiring minds and moral education
Provide guidance to the Student Government and facilitate the implementation of SG initiatives and other ad hoc student committees
Oversee student attendance, sickness reports and work collaboratively with school counselors, nurses, pod leaders and MS administration to ensure students receive necessary support
Coordinate with various external suppliers about annual student service learning and school expedition opportunities
Behavior Management:
Implement a behavior management system that is grounded in the School's Behavior Expectations and restorative justice practices that ensure infractions are teachable moments. This includes the active management and improvement of the MS handbook, advisory services to principals regarding student infractions and consequences and maintaining accurate student records
Scheduling:
Review class rosters, schedules and student pods ensuring they are optimally designed and promote healthy dynamics with input from Heads of Grade, Counselors, SEN team and Middle School administrators
Co-create scheduling of classroom assignments, co-curriculars and specials with the administrators
The ideal candidate will have:
A certified professional teaching qualification at degree level, such as B.Ed, PGCE, PGDE or equivalent
Master's Degree in Leadership and/or Administration and/or Counselling (Preferred)
Teaching and administration experience, including significant experience with Middle School aged children (minimum 10 years preferred)
Demonstrable experience as an instructional leader with a deep understanding of teaching and learning in the Middle School
Experience with the successful implementation of an enriched, standards-based American curriculum and pedagogy
Proven ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, orally and in writing
Strong work ethic, positive and professional disposition and willingness to contribute to the general welfare of DAA and the GEMS organization
