Dubai -Job Title Site Director - Kuwait International Airport Terminal 2 Location Dubai - – KIA Site Discipline Structural Background We are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world. Arup completed the design of the new terminal at Kuwait Airport in 2013. The client, Kuwait Ministry of Public Works (MPW), has appointed Limak to construct the terminal and a consortium made up of the original design team to supervise the construction and ensure design compliance. As part of the overall site supervision contract Arup has been appointed by Foster and Partners to provide a site-based team to cover the design compliance of the roof structure, façade and baggage systems. To lead the Arup team on site we require a structural engineering director with appropriate qualifications and experience to meet the requirements stipulated by the client for the role and to be able to represent Arup’s interest in dealing with a complex project. Role description To lead the Arup team of 13 engineers reviewing the contractor’s proposals for design compliance for the primary roof structure, facades and baggage systems as part of the site supervision contract. The responsibilities will include leading the Arup team to ensure we deliver our contracted scope of work and representing the Arup team at meetings with the Ministry of Public Works and with our client Foster and Partners and looking after Arup’s interests in a complex project environment with multiple parties. In addition, the Arup lead will be expected to lead the self-contained Arup site team, ensuring the well-being and development of the team members is addressed. Key responsibilities To lead the Arup team of structural engineers, façade engineers and baggage handling specialists providing a design compliance role during the construction phase of the new Terminal 2 at Kuwait International Airport To act as lead interface with Foster + Partners and Gulf Consult team on site as well as the other members of the design compliance team, NACO, AECOM and KEO To take primary reasonability for all other Arup interfaces with the client MPW and the contractor Limak and their sub-contractors To act as site-based project director for Arup responsible for the commercial management of the Arup commission To liaise with the Arup head office-based project director to ensure that appropriate expertise is mobilised to deal with the on-going requirements of the site team. The site-based project director will be required to seek head office review and input when appropriate to the technical work and to agree limits of expenditure in this regard To set up systems on site to manage change control, document flow, programme, mobilisation plans and all other aspects to operate as a remote self-contained team on site. The leadership role of the site-based team is to encompass all aspects of leadership including terms and conditions, training and development and welfare The site project director will be responsible for the Health and Safety of the site team and must ensure that there is a safe working environment for the site team at all times, review the site and office risk assessments regularly, and carry out or arrange, and keep a record of, regular briefings and training in relation to H&S. Person specification Degree qualified structural engineer with over 20 years’ experience Professionally registered with internationally recognised body Appropriate international experience of working with complex building structures and high-profile architects Experience of leading multi-discipline design teams in complex project environments Excellent organisational skills and ability to lead, motivate and develop the Arup team on site The ability to work successfully with the wider Arup team and to be able to contribute to the development our technical capability in dealing with the design and construction of complex structures Experience of working in the Middle East and willing to relocate to Kuwait for the period of assignment on site Exhibits the competencies of a Grade 9 director.
